Nursery - Oak Class

Weekly News 31.3.2025

This week:

In literacy, we have been focussing on 'Kitchen Disco' by Clare Foges. The children have enjoyed the story and we had a go at dancing like the fruit in the story. Some children did ask what Conga means, so we decided to give it a try and they were all excited and did not want to stop dancing! This text was also making a link to rhyme and rhythm in phonics where children have to listen to the music and dance according to the music rhythm. During the week we also had a practise at spotting the rhyming words from different stories. The children also had a chance to connect the dots in tracing over the initial letters of the fruit from the story.

In Phonics, this week we have covered all 7 aspects of phase one phonics as we are getting ready to start learning about phase one letter sounds after Easter holiday. The children are getting better at listen and guessing the environmental sounds quicker than before. We have done a listening walk in our playground outside to listen to different things around school. The children did enjoy playing with musical indruments and using traffic lights to stop when they see a red card, and start again when they see a green card. Those are the crucial skills in music but also to support attention and listening in general. The children loved the silly alliteration such as 'five fat fish, sausages sizzling sound, hairy hat has hands, and dancing daddy David'. It was lovely to see the children laugh because some of the phrase does not make sense so they found it funny.

In Maths, we have been focusing on shape, space, and measure. The children have been exploring position and space. Through out the week we have been breaking things down into smaller learning objectives to make it easier to understand. Such as children to respond to simple language of position, select shapes for a space, recognise when two objects are the same shape, explore and describe shapes and objects, and sort shapes and objects into categories.

This week the children had an opportunity to celebrate Eid and take part in Easter trail where each child made a basket and the whole class went for Easter egg hunt as the Easter bunny has arrived early this year at Broad Oak school! This was after the Nursery children took part in the whole school assembly this morning. Overall, I was so pleased with the children's behaviour in the hall I think they all were amazing! Hope you all have a lovely Easter holiday, and see you all when we come back on 22nd April.
